Churn It Up

We’re still coming down from the sugar high of Easter. I can’t believe how much candy the boys got, and that was even after we recycled the stuff from the morning hunt and put it in the evening egg hunt. We now have 2 gallon bags of junk that will quickly disappear (and not into little mouthes).
So the boys had school today, and afterward I thought it would be fun to have the kids make butter like I did when I was a little kid. Don’t get me wrong, we were never forced to churn butter each night for the family dinner, but it was a preschool project and my mom was a preschool teacher so we got to do lots of things like that for the experience. So I got the heavy cream and the baby food jars ready and the kids started to shake them. My memory bites, because as I recall we shook and shook and shook that stuff before we actually got butter. This time, the kids shook the jars for about 30 seconds and then said they were done and I didn’t believe it. The boys must be excellent shakers because they made butter in 30 seconds flat!
It was family dinner night with Mary and Alice and I made a Martha Stewart Bean and Polenta Pie (didn’t think anyone would eat it….Levi and Alice LOVED it). It tasted pretty much like a burrito and was something I’d make again. I made sure to buy some bread so the kids could have their homemade butter to spread on it. They were jazzed and it tasted great!

Happy Easter!

Apparently we are going to have to give the boys our old digital camera. Nana and Papa did that with their broken one, and Carlos fixed it! They took some decent pictures, too. The first picture here was taken by Carlos.
Nana found some gummy worms that looked so real even our dirt and grime loving litte ones were hesitant to eat them. They overcame their fears and down the hatch they went.
Great breakfast and it’s always nice to go to my folk’s house and just hang out. My project for the rest of the day is bringing up bins and organizing the boy’s clothes. It’s a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE job…I hate it. Time for Spring clothes to come out and some of the Winter stuff to get put away. Yeah, I know, I’m optimistic!

I Almost Forgot….

Just a funny little story about last night:

The boys had helped us put the eggs out for our big hunt and did a great job spreading out the eggs, or at least we thought. When the kids all took off, Carlos ran straight to one of the far trees out in the orchard. Apparently he had hidden about 15 eggs and knew just where to go.

Smart little guy!

Flashlight Egg Hunt

What a crazy busy day we had today. But it was oh so fun! Started out getting the boys all dressed up for the Messenger House Easter Egg Hunt. Always a good time, the boys got to see the Easter Bunny and get a ton of eggs. Levi had art class where he made a seriously cool painting (framable at age 4!) then all the boys took a short nap.

We did “poop patrol” on the 5 acres and got the eggs all set out for the first annual Field-Bennett Flashlight Egg Hunt. It was SOOOO fun. I think a good time was had by all. There were lots of kids with flashlights and baskets and off they went to collect eggs we had “hidden” in the yard. Now I say hidden in quotations because there had to have been at least

200 eggs out in the yard, just out there but I put reflector tape on each one so when the light shined on them it looked like little lights in the grass. Next year we are going to add the adult part of the hunt and hide beer in the trees. Does that sound white trash or what?

It didn’t take long for the kids to find all the eggs and we headed in for cookies and juice boxes. The kids watched Dora’s Egg Hunt and played for a bit and we cleaned up and got the boys to bed.

What a great day! Here’s a video of the flashlight egg hunt…pretty cool, huh?

Baby Idol

It’s that time of year again, although my boys have been shorted. I submitted all three boys for Movin’ 92.5 Baby Idol contest (who wouldn’t want to win an IKEA shopping spree?!!?!?) and they only got Carlos entered. Who knows what happened.

Anyhow, come on people and help me out. Let’s get Mama K some new IKEA stuff. Carlos is a cute kid, give him a vote! Tell your friends, hell, tell your enemies.

Voting starts on Monday (3/24 – Babies A-C (Voting will begin 3/24 @ 9:00am PST and end 3/25 @ 8:59am PST) and the website is http://www.movin925.com/

He’s “Carlos F.” and this is the picture.

Thanks!!!!

Egg Blowing 101

We did a fun craft at MNMs today, it was very Martha Stewart-like. We blew eggs and then decorated them with glue and fancy glitter. They were so pretty and it blew me away how many of the moms made these perfect eggs. Mine were cool but in no way ready for retail sales.
Thought I would try it at home with the boys. Carolyn came over to have dinner and Mary and Alice joined us as well, for dinner and egg blowing. The kids had a ball, they really did a lot better than I thought they would and we only had one crushed egg. Trey gave up after a bit to watch a movie, but Levi and Carlos stuck it out, blew out the eggs and took great care in decorating them.

I think tomorrow we’re dying eggs, the more traditional approach! I’m sure there will be pictures of that. Last year Trey just cried and screamed at us the whole egg dying time so we’ll see what a year brings.

Chaos!!!

So this year the local Parks Dept decided that it would be a great idea to combine spring and summer class registration into one session. NOT cool. I don’t really want to plan my August in March. I’m more on a day to day survival track at this point.
Anyhow, since there isn’t preschool we try to have the boys doing at least one thing during each of the summer weeks, with a couple off for “vacation”. There are some great programs, but with our limited budget we have to pick and choose. We also get some amazing support from a local agency so our boys would get to do things way out of our budget. I am so thankful. I think the prices have gotten way out of control for kid’s programs in general. For the classes I hope to get them into the pricetag would have been $820. Staggering.
So, the sign upstarts Friday morning at 10am and then I’ll know really if the boys are going to do all the things I am hoping to get them into. You wouldn’t believe, and I’m not the only mom to do this, but we basically have to make up a blank calendar, chart out what is offered and when and then make a spreadsheet as to who’s doing what. So, if all goes well, the boys will be each having 2 sessions of swimming lessons, Trey gets to go to Future Stars (sports) Camp, and Levi and Carlos are doing big kid Future Stars, Forest Friends Camp and Gymnastics Camp. Should be fun!

Hooray for Trey!

Today was a banner day for Trey and his efforts at potty training. Sure, I’ve posted pictures of the little guy in his undies before, but today he earned them. He got up, as usual, played around a little and before I had even picked out clothes for them he came up to me and said he needed to go potty….AND…he was clean and dry! So he stayed dry all night and asked to go to the bathroom before he had wet himself. Hooray for Trey! Wouldn’t it be amazing if we actually had all three boys potty trained at 2 1/2?

Hello? Hello?

So Levi’s friend, Rob (he’s a grown-up and our friend but Levi LOVES him and they hang out), called and left a message for Levi asking if he wanted to go see Horton Hears A Who. Levi was so excited to hear from Rob that his whole body just moves, it’s cool to see that. Anyhow, he didn’t quite understand that he was listening to a message, not really talking to Rob…funny.
