Genius? You Make the Call

I think I may be a genius! I know, tooting my own horn but after you hear this, you’ll agree. So about 8 years ago, when I was living in my little grey house on Mountain View Road, I got a couple of kittens (Jack and Diane). Don’t ask me why, I’m allergic to cats but I guess it was for the company and who doesn’t think kittens are cute?! So Diane has since “gone missing” and it’s only Jack left and I can’t pet him much or else my eyes swell shut and I sneeze uncontrollably. I know this doesn’t show my pure genius just yet but stay with me….Levi LOVES animals. He talks to bugs and worms and birds and wants to pet any dog we pass by in the park. SO…I’ve made one of his daily jobs to go out on the back porch and pet Jack each morning. He loves it, and I feel like a better pet owner and the thing with Levi is he’s such a clean freak that he comes in and immediately washes his hands after petting the cat, so no allergy issues for me! Like I said, pure genius!

The big boys got new backpacks for school and they haven’t taken them off since they got them. Funny part is, they are almost bigger than they are!

Last night we had family dinner with Mary and Alice, it was wonderful. Mary brought short ribs from Central Market (about the best thing ever) and we had a great dinner then weeded the garden and harvested veggies while the kids played in the yard. I had thought it was Kathy Schott’s birthday and got a hideously bright flowery cupcake cake to celebrate. Well, her birthday is a month away so we ate the cupcakes and sang Happy Birthday to her anyway! The kids thought it was fun and liked having cupcakes!
Here’s the video:
No big plans for the day, just hanging around. Going to try to go to the BHS football game tonight. Time to pull out the boy’s jerseys!

Domestic Diva

So I got a little domestic yesterday…don’t know why. Maybe since I’ve been PMSing for the last month. Arggh! Anyhow, started out like any other day where we got up, went to swimming lessons (Carlos has teacher “Tam” the rest of the week and he LOVES her…his first swim teacher…so he’s happy to get into the pool) and the kids came home, ate lunch and napped. While they napped I made spaghetti sauce from scratch and let it simmer in the crockpot for the day. I even snuck some garden-grown zucchinis in the sauce and they never knew.

The kids got up, we played outside for a little while and decided to go to Battle Point to pick blackberries. Our boys are GREAT pickers…here’s how it always goes: I give each of the boys a cup to put their berries in, and I pick with a bowl that they can dump their cup into.

Levi kinda picks, he examines each berry and tries to find ones that are perfect. If they are a little red, he’ll eat them and tell me how “spicy” they are. The majority of the time he is too worried about the prickers or gets too distracted by a bug or spider to keep picking. When he comes to dump his cup, there are usually about 6 berries in it.

Carlos is a little worker. He knows the job and picks and picks. He stomps down the prickers to get to berries that are just out of his reach and doesn’t mind if he gets a scratch. When he comes to dump his cup, it’s at least half full.

Trey likes to pick berries, but he just can’t help himself and he eats most of what he picks. We’ll be lucky if he contributes 2 berries to the greater good.

So anyhow, we picked berries yesterday and came home and the boys played outsided awhile and then we came in while I put the pasta together (success…they loved it!) and made blackberry cobbler (they loved that, too!). Got them to bed then tried to watch a show and was too tired to keep my eyes open so I was actually in bed by 9:15 reading! The downside of going to bed so early…I was wide awake at 5:30. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

The pictures are of our little “Erkel”…each night at bedtime, Carlos pulls his pajama bottoms up as high as he can and dances around laughing. This particular pair of pjs doesn’t hike up too high, but you get the idea. It’s hilarious!

A Wonderful Evening…

I wanted to get pictures from last night up, what a wonderful evening! I’ll type more later, Carlos is up sleeping on me and I have to hunt and peck type with one hand. Video coming soon…Holly doing her song “Mary, Mary” with Carlos spilling a pocketful of coins on the metal slide as the finale. Nice. Oh, and it is kind of wobbly, sorry bout that, apparently our playstructure doesn’t make a good tripod. And yes, the other kids were here too, but Carlos has a deep love for Holly and hung out outside with us while his brothers watched “Cars”.

Thy Deck Be Done

Our boys just love helping with tools. We started last night to take off our front deck, it was unsafe and an accident waiting to happen. Carlos was hammering away at the old boards while Levi measured. I think Dee got more done when the boys came in for naptime, though. It looks great! More about naptime later.

While the deck work was being done I was inside cleaning. We are trying to make the place nice for our house concert tomorrow night with Holly. I did some deep, deep cleaning. We got all the carpets steam cleaned and the bedding all washed. The floor swept, the carpets vacuumed….you get the idea. Lots of work to do! Things are looking mighty fine despite the boys trying to undo all that I’ve done.

Back to naptime. Carlos was a nightmare. If anyone has ideas on how to get a 3 year old to sleep then please fill me in. It was more than a battle. We were trying to get the boys all to sleep early because we were going over to Patti’s retirement party at 2. Carlos was in our room singing and laughing and grinning whenever one of us would go into the room. We left the front door open, Dee was working on the deck and I went out to mow the lawn. I came in periodically to check on our non-sleeper and each time, of course, he was still awake. I finished mowing, brought a load of laundry up only to find that my sweet young son had locked the back door. I wasn’t happy but went around to the sliding door and found that he had locked that one, too. I banged on the door and he finally let me in, all the while grinning ear to ear. Turns out he never did take a nap, so he learned a hard lesson and was dropped off and the Fisher’s house while we went onto Patti’s party. Yea, he was pretty shocked to be dropped off, that’s for sure. This boy needs some definite wake up calls. Anyhow, I eventually picked him up from Fishers and joined the party again and he slept in the car and awhile at the party, it was great to see everyone and celebrate Patti’s retirement.

Came home, did some more work to get ready and fought Carlos once again at bedtime. It’s draining!!! Looking forward to tomorrow, time to unwind a little with some mindless tv.

Nathan….I’m watching your favorite movie, 9 to 5! 🙂

And Then They Wore Red

Whew, is today over yet? It was a whirlwind day and we did a ton. Started with swimming lessons (Carlos put his face in the water, woo hoo!) then headed right off to Tacoma to go to the zoo. I told the kids that they would have to sleep in the car if they wanted to go see the animals, and holy cow, it worked! They all slept about an hour. I figured a nap could only help our cause. We stopped for a quick sandwich at a picnic area outside the zoo and tried to get a little food in the kids before we got inside the gates and they claimed starvation and tried to drive me broke with zoo concessions. We laid down the strategy (no running away, no begging for toys, don’t torment the animals, etc) and got to see lots of animals. Trey wanted sharks, but didn’t get that they were going to be tiny, Carlos loves the belugas, I have NO idea why but he loves them, and Levi just wanted to see a monkey. We saw the sharks and belugas and more and asked a zookeeper where the monkeys were (by this time my dogs were barking and I was ready to head out but wanted to keep my promise to Levi to see monkeys) and she said they only had apes. The kids didn’t get that they are very similar so when we saw some apes Levi and Alice both screamed, “monkeys! we better go tell that lady that they DO have them”) Ah, sweet innocence.
After the zoo we stopped into Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital to visit our friend, Josiah, who is 6 months old and just had surgery to get a g-tube. He was doing great, and it was good to see him and Carolyn (his foster mom). I think she appreciated us stopping in and we brought him some super cool skater shoes and some funny shirts (“I pulled an all nighter” and “Instructions not included”)
Ended the day with a trip to Home Depot with Mama Dee and Gramma Patti. They are their Mama Dee’s boys because they LOVE that place. Fun trip and a nice dinner out before coming home to crash. The boys went down pretty easy tonight, but Carlos thinks there is a dinosaur under his bed….dude, you have smart mamas who know it’s just a stall tactic! HA!

Sometimes, after a day of battling the children and feeling like you just aren’t sure whether or not you’ve “won”…a sweet moment like this happens. Trey loves his May-May. The kids love the Veggie Tales Larry’s Silly Songs dvd (thanks, Nana) and want it played whenever they get a chance to watch a movie. The songs are catchy but I seriously find myself humming them in the car, when the kids are listening to a book on cd and I’m up driving in almost silence. Let me reword that…when there’s nobody fighting about toys or who’s touching them or Trey screaming “No Junie B Jones, want Lightning McQueen!”, that’s when I get some quiet driving time and those damn Veggie Tales songs creep into my head. There’s no escape. I’m sure my folks thought the same about my music in the 80’s!

We’ve got swimming lessons today and many of you have asked how Carlos is doing in the water now that he has a new teacher. It’s GREAT…she doesn’t put up with any garbage from him. The first day he cried from the moment he got in the pool until he got out. It wasn’t sobbing, he was fine and doing everything she asked him to do, just cried while he did it. Yesterday he started crying the minute he got to the pool, and I had to remind him that he had half an hour before his lessons even started so he might want to save the tears. He stopped immediately, amazing. I think he realized that the crying didn’t work for the lessons, though, and got in the pool with no fuss and had a good lesson. We’ll see how it goes today.

On the speech front…as many of you have also asked about (notice a pattern here!?!? Carlos doesn’t like change!) We had speech with Julia again yesterday and she tried a new approach. She took Carlos to play for the 30 minutes, no work, just play, to win him over. They had fun in the sandbox and burying his hands and was excited about it. When she asked him if he wanted to come back next week he said, “no”. I kept trying to remind him of the fun he just had and he still said “no”. He’s not easily won over, this boy.

We’ve got swimming today, then I’ll have to do an attitude check and see if the kids are all up for more fun…and maybe enjoy this sunny day and head to the Point Defiance Zoo. We haven’t been all summer and they love it, but we’ll have to see. Wish me luck…four toddlers at the zoo! I’m sure I’ll have plenty to blog about tonight and I may even try to get a picture or two.

Here’s the latest picture of the boys…kind of captures who they are at this point of their lives. Levi is the goof off, Carlos has that spark of naughty mixed with pride, and Trey is smiling and happy go lucky. Makes for some interesting days

for sure.

I got forwarded an Ebay listing today from a Mom’s group from a mom who sold some Pokemon cards that her kids snuck into the grocery cart. I laughed out loud and shared it with as many people as I could. This mom is hilarious and her blog is funny reading, I can relate to her 100%! Here’s the link to the blog if you want some funny reading, enjoy! http://mom2my6pack.blogspot.com/

The boys are very into pirates now…we got them all cool skull, flame and crossbone do-rags, each have an eye patch and also swords. They love it! We even got a “Pirate on Board” sticker for the van.

We tried to get them in bed by 7:30 last night and we did but they actually didn’t get to sleep until much later. It’ll get better and hopefully be back on track by the time school starts.

Swimming lessons today, then we are going to go over to Patti and Jeannie’s place to check out the heavy equipment that will be over there (they are getting their driveway paved) and tonight there is a ceremony at City Hall for Patti, why just retired after 31 years with the Bainbridge Police. Congrats, Patti!

So I’m a total internet addict….Dee and the boys are now in bed, they were watching a movie when I left, and I’m at the local McDonald’s using their Wi-Fi connection to post pictures to the blog. Seriously! I’ll check myself into rehab when I get home for my addiction for sure.

Anyhow, we got up this morning and Linda and the girls, and Papa B and Sandy came out to go swimming. Papa and Sandy didn’t swim, but Linda and the girls did and we had a great time. This time Trey went under as well as Carlos. Don’t know what it is about this pool but we were right there both times and grabbed them up real quick and they both kept swimming so all’s good. We got back up to the room to change and Dee said, “You know, I don’t want to leave today…I’m not ready.” So we made some calls and got the jobs taken care of, the dog watched one more day, speech postponed for Carlos and a call into the pool to cancel swimming lessons tomorrow. We even got to stay in the same hotel room. Great decision, we were having so much vacation fun and not ready to return to the daily grind. I know the boys are just going to lose it getting back to daily life.

ok, power is running out on the computer…damn….post more later!
